Frugal Friday: Library Museum Passes

I finally took advantage of one of the Great Advantages of our public library system: Cheap Museum Passes. My husband was away earlier at a conference, so I had three days in which to fill the time (besides from cleaning and homework!), and though I had an overly ambitious schedule, I did get to cross off my Number One priority: visiting the Peabody Essex Museum in Salem, MA. It’s very close by to us, I have friends that used to work there, yet somehow I’d never made it inside.

And.I.Loved.It. For all the homeschoolers out there who’ve read “Carry On, Mr. Bowditch” (and I know you all have…rite of passage with accompanying Progeny Press study guide!), they had a copper plate he etched for map-making, as well as a portrait of Nathaniel Hawthorne, an amazing exhibit on Maori Mako (face-tattoos), mast-heads, and an absolutely astounding array of Maritime/Colonial New England art and artifacts.

I spent over three hours there and in no way covered it all. I skipped all of the Asian exhibits, ran through the Modern Indian exhibit, and didn’t even get to the Arctic Exhibition. It’s absolutely HUGE…and my feet were hurting by the time I left, that’s for sure! Families will be dragged the next time they come to visit.

My pass was only $5.00 (normal admission for students is $11.00, adults $15.00) and would have admitted two people. In my excitement, I also got a $5.00 pass to the Boston MFA, though I was too tired to trek into the city that last day. You pay at the museum, so no big deal if you don’t actually make it; I had to return the PEM pass that day (or else get fined!), but the MFA pass was a disposable.

I couldn’t believe how well-worth it they were, and would be, especially for homeschoolers and the frugal-yet-culturally-engaged!

WFMW: No Post-Valentine’s Regret

Like a lot of others, we decided NOT to go anywhere on Valentine’s Day itself. We pretty much (A) don’t care too much about the holiday, (B) it’s crowded and (C) this year we had friends over. Much cooler that way.

Last year we thought we would be smart & frugal, flying under the Fancy Dinner radar by going to Friendly’s. BAD idea. Apparently, that’s the Once-You’ve-Had-Kids place to be. I think we waited for over an hour to be seated, waited over an hour for our (cold) food, and got one comped dessert for the wait.

This year, we went to dinner early (pre-5 PM, so I could eat!) the day before, and hit the “cheap” movie theatre afterward (though not that cheap, unfortunately!) to see Slumdog Millionaire, which we realllly wanted to see badly before the Oscars. It was definitely worth the “theatre-money”: brilliant acting, and an amazing storyline. Plus, at the Cheesecake Factory (where we went…you can get some great food cheap there, surprisingly enough!) we still got the free Valentine’s Day coupons they were giving out…we both got “for you/for a friend” coupons for a complimentary slice of cheesecake!

So, we find we don’t spend THAT much, get a great evening without the crowds, and still have a very enjoyable time out. I think this will become our new tradition!

Menu Monday

We’re nicely stocked up with groceries this week, since I did a pretty big shop at Market Basket this past Saturday. It was the first time in a while I shopped for a menu, rather than the sales, and I was pretty happy with what I got for the price…even if it wasn’t the MOST frugal trip in the world. But when we have guests, we want to celebrate!

You can also see how we wanted to take advantage of the February Thaw to do a lot of grilling. 😉

Monday: Leftover Grilled Chicken with chelow and maast-o-khiar and pita bread.
Tuesday: I’m at class (leftover grilled steak with Caesar Salad and roasted herbed potatoes)
Wednesday: Bible Study (eat out)
Thursday: TGI Friday’s Frozen Fajita Skillet Meal with Tortillas.
Friday: Rosemary Grilled Pork Chops with stuffing and corn.
Saturday: Coconut-Lime Chicken (I modify by adding green peppers, and some Indian spices, and cooking it all on the stove top); with naan.
Sunday: Leftovers.
